My son Jack took these photos. Note that the elevators drop you off right in front of the Apple Store. The guy in the right hand picture thought it was unusual enough to see a 4 year old snapping pictures (with an expensive looking digital camera) that he took one of Jack.

Linda (from Apple corporate) let me into the store early. Here she is (on the right in both pix) working with a few other employees in the hour before opening. Linda was at Northshore, International, Crossgates, West Farms, Tice, and we just missed her at Rockingham.

Here is the storefront from the inside and some employees testing the demo accessories. Note the boxes of T-shirts piled by the door. To follow form they'll have to be moved to the other side of the door before opening.

The crowd is gathering at the door. First in line (in blue) is a fellow from MIT who arrived at 3:30AM. This was his first opening and he is grateful for the mass-transit access this location brings. One of the other early arrivals has been to 4 previous grand openings including Buffalo.

The Apple store employees are gathering for a final pep-talk in the back. Note that the software in the kid's area (picture at right) is on shelves that are kid height.

The Grand Opening

Now we're gathered at the front of the store to do the door opening. You have to see this or play the movie to really get what this is like. It's very cheerful and loud.

The doors open, the crowd goes wild. The right hand pic is Linda welcoming guests.

My wife Nancy caught me running around with my camcorder.

Kid's Software and play area

P0013442P0013440
The kid's area offers games, educational software, and a demonstration and play area, all of which are perfectly sized for kids. Notice that the shelves are shorter so any 9 year old can reach the top shelf.

The games featured on the computers are a combination of exciting and educational.

MP3 players

MP3 players. Apple got rid of the high end RIO 800 from this collection since last week. What is left includes the Rio Volt SP250 $179, Rio 600/32MB, $99, Creative Labs Nomad Jukebox $249, Nike PSA120 $199, and Creative Labs Nomad II MG $199. The iPod has it's own kiosk - center pic.

Genius Bar

This is where you go when you want technical assistance, random help, accessory recommendations. The genius bar is the first place that mac fans want to go. At a grand opening it can get pretty busy.

Systems, laptops, pro, consumer

P0013445P0013462
One quarter of the store wall on each side of the store is devoted to desktop computers, Pro (G4 minitower) on the left and consumer (iMac) on the right. Islands adjacent to each section contain the ibook and TiBook computers. All computers are on and hooked to the Internet. You can even send e-mail from the stations. I use this feature frequently to send contact info on the great people I meet at the stores.

Software

P0013459P0013453
Most of the shelf space in the store is devoted to Mac compatable software. The rest is devoted to Mac computers and Mac compatable hardware.

Theatre

P0013457P0013501
On the left the theatre is just doing the iTunes music enhancement thing and playing rock music. Later they were using the theatre to demonstrate software.

Store Operations

The cash registers run on iMacs and are located just inside the front entrance to the store.
