Cops and Admins

A note about BZFlag registration

The BZFlag game includes an integrated relationship with the bzflag.org server. Registration of a tank name is performed on the bzflag BB and will result in REGISTERED privilages on participating BZFlag worlds (of which GMWAR is one).
You can't send private messages using the BZFlag BB without first registering.

COP   updated 7/29/2006

What is a cop?
A cop on GMWAR is a player that has volunteered to keep order on the server. They commit to caring for the other players to give the other players the best experience on the server.
Who are the cops?
Each cop is a frequent visitors to this map who has been judged by the owner/operator to be a valient and steady player. They have never shown signs of being a sore loser or sore winner. They have shown the capacity to learn, promote, diagnose and create. Cops are nominated by other cops. The final decision is the owner/operator's.
What do the cops do?
Cops make sure the play is consistant with the owner/operator's goals. We want a pleasant environment where oldsters and youngins alike can be comfortable.
Cops ask for cooperation from players regarding cheating and niceness of language. They also may offer hints and advice to players. If a player is cheating or using rude language the cop is expected to judge that the player knows the rules or to inform the player of the rules and if the player does not desist, to ban the player. The cop will also request a log inquiry about the player using /report so further action (including a multiple-server ban) may be taken if needed.
What makes a player a cop?
BZFlag lets us specify what features are available to a user based on the user's membership in groups on the bzflag bulletin board. We use this capability to give certain players abilities that they will use to patrol and keep order on the server.
How do I become a cop?
If you want to be a COP, be on the server enough that the other COPs and ADMINs will learn to know you. Do NOT ask to be a COP. That is a real clue that you aren't COP material.
How long does it take to be nominated?
It has taken as long as a year. There is no rule that decides this. It has as much to do with personalities as it does with duration. There is no 'how long'. Just have fun playing the game. If you really like GMWAR, and would hate it if it were just like the other maps, stay around and play. Learn all about the map as it is. Come up with ways to improve it. Chat with the other players. Win some games. Help some noobies. Figure out the puzzle. Read this web page. Check out the help files. Feel free to comment. Use private messages to send mail to tadd who is the author, or to other players that you meet in the game.
See coprules for more info.

COP_RULES   updated 9/29/2006

What are the COP RULES?
These are rules for behavior for cops on Tadd's maps.
Cops must be frequent users of Tadd's maps.  They must be able to share an email address or phone# with the other cops and be ok with having their face on a photo in the rogue's gallery.
We won't make a cop out of somebody who doesn't have a real identity.
Cops make sure users do not run cheat clients, use lag-cheats, masquerade as another player, or use racial taunts, rated R or X language or illegal behavior (i.e. plan robberies, threaten people, etc..).
The Cops have the power to /SAY /KICK /BAN /MSG /FLAG /VIEWREPORTS
Cops have the power to kick, ban and speak as the server. The Cops are charged with keeping the conversations clean. Cops are not allowed to ban people for winning or "evil" play although intentionally shooting one's teammates is a banable offence. COPs must warn privately and then publicly before banning unless the offense is deliberate and repetitive -- use judgement. The ADMINs may ban somebody forever after log review if the ADMIN thinks the offence was bad enough even if the COPs do not take action or even warn.
If you want to be a COP, be on the server enough that the other COPs and ADMINs will learn to know you.  Do NOT ask to be a COP. That is a real clue that you aren't COP material.

BAN   updated 8/22/2006

COPs and ADMINs may ban players. They should then /report so Tadd can follow up and ban the player on the other servers as well, or look for other interesting information, like prevous user names and history.
Below are the two major methods for banning. One uses the IP address and the other uses the player number.  If the user logs out before you can note the IP address, or use the player number, scroll back up using page up, to where the player first joined, and copy the IP address from there.  Alternatively, you can just do a /report and Tadd will search the log for the IP address later.
/ban 21.21.21.21 0 player foofoofoo - 8/19/2006 swearing and badgering the admins
/ban #25 0 this guy kept rejoining with different names and TKing - 8/19/2006
