Vinalhaven has a commercial area a few blocks deep (or less) around Carver's Harbor centered around the 'Tide motel and the fishing fleet.

This construction is the building of a new ferry terminal. This was shot on July 1, 2000. I was told that the terminal would allow for a slightly larger ferry than the fleet currently in use. The ferry terminal is on the left as we enter the harbor.

This is a view of downtown and the center of Carver harbor.

This photo is looking to the right from the ferry. I have some photos of this area taken from on shore. Those are in a later chapter. Note the large number of floating small objects. These are marker bouys for lobster traps. They are all over the salt-water shallows and tidal basins in the area. Lobstering constitutes a large part of the output of the local industry.

Here we are arriving at the ferry terminal. Notice the ramp that will drop onto the ferry to allow the cars to enter and leave the ferry. Also note the seagulls on the top of the terminal gate control building.

Our ferry is approaching the dock.

At the entrance to the harbor there is a boat heading out.

Now we're on the island, this is the Vinalhaven ferry terminal. On the right you can see the new terminal being constructed.

Here's another view of the new construction.

Most of the harbor is surrounded by fishing businesses.
This pier is stacked with lobster traps.
